and myself, feel free to modify and repost.So after watching Frozen I had this nagging feeling there was a subliminal message in there. I think I found it, so hang on and let me explain things as I see it.
First off we see the sisters playing as children, which is all great but then something happens and Elsa’s parents do the worst thing possible.
Lock it away.
Elsa’s magic isn’t the snow and winter but the fact she’s a lesbian, Disney made the winter magic a metaphor for her lesbianism.
Don’t lynch me, let me explain.
1) Elsa is taught from an early age, ‘conceal it, don’t feel it.”
a. That tells me her parents are closed minded and unaccepting of their daughter.
2) She locks herself away in her room, ie she’s in the closet.
a. ‘Don’t play or have fun with your sister, you’ll make her a lesbian too.” Great message there mom and dad.<sarcasm>
3) At the ball it’s revealed Elsa is a lesbian, They use winter magic as a metaphor, the reaction is hate, condemnation, suspicion, ‘sorcery’. Everything evil most people think of same sex relationships, except for one person; Elsa’s sister, she still loves her sister no matter what.
a. In the courtyard everyone see’s Elsa’s lesbianism, again the winter magic was a metaphor, people held their children and turned in fear like same-sex love (romance not lust) is a disease. And being gay makes you a monster.
i. GROW UP PEOPLE!
4) In the song “Let it go.” Elsa comes out, she literally let's go and embraces who she is. Too bad she had to wait until she was an adult.
a. ‘Yes I’m alone but I’m alone and free’ shows Elsa accepts who she is and what she is no matter the consequence of what others think. I’m surprised Disney didn’t make her another evil villain. I.e. Disney has a tendency to make people of position and authority, especially Queens…evil.
i. The Disney Evil Lesbian Queen of Winter.
5) “Love is an open door.” WOW! Disney just laid it all out there and said it. Love is for EVERYONE!
6) Oaken’s Trading post….umm did anyone catch that fact that Oaken is gay. Look at his family when he waves at them. The bare chested person in the center…not a woman, but it happened so fast and never made mention that it’s there for people to see and accept. Ie. a magician’s sleight of hand technique. Show you, but lead you with misdirection, we were caught up in seeing the kids, and not Oaken’s lover.
7) Anna’s jerk of a prince and the Weaselton’s D-bag, are both potential husbands and shown to be useless and jerks. More subliminal swaying of the audience. These girls don’t need men.
8) Again I have to say this! Throughout the movie we see Anna accepting of Elsa, that folks is Lesson Two of the movie. Accept your gay family member, they are still human and still family.
So let me sum up Frozen:
When she’s very young, it is discovered that she is different, and is told she has to control it and hide it from everyone.
As she gets older, it gets worse, and she’s extremely unhappy because she is being forced into a role that she doesn’t want. She locks herself into her room and won’t come out; it’s exactly like being in the closet. (need I say more?)
Finally there is a breaking point where her secret is revealed to everyone it causes her to run away as people call her horrible names. People are afraid, confused and angry because of something she was born with that she cannot control or get rid of. (it’s part of who she is and she’s told to fear it, being a winter sorceress (lesbian) means being a monster.)
But through the entire movie her sister doesn’t care. Anna loves Elsa no matter what secret Elsa was hiding, and goes looking for her to bring her home. (That is a family member EVERYONE needs!)
Elsa learns to accept that she is this way and that there are people who love her regardless of how she is. In the end, when she is open about who she is, her life improves drastically and her relationships with other people become significant and healthy.
The people who called her a freak and a monster are sent away, never to return, and Elsa lives happily and out to the world.
